No.2 Football falls to Westfield in OT heartbreaker, 43-42

The No.2 ranked Brownsburg football team suffered its first loss of the season to No.7 Westfield, 43-42. The Shamrocks two-point conversion on the final play pushed Westfield past Brownsburg (5-1, 3-1 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference) in overtime. 

The Bulldogs trailed 35-28 in the second half following a rushing touchdown from the Shamrocks. Brownsburg's defense halted Westfield on a pair of drives, setting up a game-tying Bulldog drive in the fourth. QB Ben Easters found WR Talibe Diallo for a 49-yard gain on third down of the drive. RB Brandon Burks punched in a 5-yard touchdown to tie the game at 35 with 5:40 left in regulation.

Brownsburg stopped Westfield on third down of the following drive. Westfield punted and Brownsburg took over with 2:21 left in regulation. Brownsburg marched down the field but missed the potential game-winning field goal from 30 yards out.

Brownsburg and Westfield traded blows in the first half to set up the overtime finish. RB Caleb Marcus scored three times in the first to make it a 21-21 game at the break. Marcus, who ran 34 times for 134 yards and four rushing touchdowns in the loss, scored on the overtime drive to give Brownsburg the lead. Marcus has 10 touchdowns for the Bulldogs over his last three games.

Easters was 11-20 and passed for 172 yards against Westfield. Easters also ran for a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Burks had 21 carries for 116 yards in the loss.

The Bulldogs hit the road next week looking to bounce back from the loss. Brownsburg travels to Class 5A No.9 Zionsville Oct. 2 for a 7 p.m. kick.
