Bulldogs Take First Game of Series

The Bulldogs took the first game of the conference series against Zionsville last night by beating them on the road 4-2.  The Dogs jumped out to an early lead with a 2-out, 3-run rally that had some clutch hits and some great base running.  With two outs in the top of the 1st, junior 3B Jacson McGowan and senior DH Cody Gill both reached base after getting hit by the pitcher.  Junior P/SS Caleb Sampen followed that with an RBI single up the middle scoring Cody Gill.  Junior C Brooks Bireley then added another run with an RBI single of his own down the right field line.  To finish the inning, senior 1B Sam Comer hit a slow roller up toward short that was handled poorly by the Zionsville SS allowing junior PR Andrew Dishinger (running for Sampen) to score from 2B.  Caleb Sampen started the game on the mound and was able to hold the Eagles scoreless through two innings (allowing 0 runs on 0 hits) before junior LHP Triston Polley took over in the 3rd.  The Dogs remained ahead 3-0 until they added a run in the 4th behind a single from senior CF Tyler Houston.  Houston made his way to 3B on a passed ball and a stolen base before being brought home by Gill's sacrifice fly to center.  The Eagles threatened in the 4th, adding two runs, but Polley was able to stomp out the rally in the bottom of the 5th and shut them out in the 6th.  Junior RHP Michael Klayer entered in the 7th and collected his 5th save of the season.
