Bulldogs Split with HSE

Bulldogs Split with HSE

The Bulldogs split an HCC series with HSE this past weekend winning the opening game 7-2 but dropping the Saturday afternoon game by the score of 8-4.  In the Friday night game, the Bulldogs were led by the strong pitching performance of junior LHP Triston Polley (2-1).  Polley threw the first complete game of the season for any Bulldog pitcher and struck out 6 HSE batters while only allowing 2 runs.  Offensively, the Bulldogs took the lead early with a Tyler Houston home run in the bottom of the 1st.  The Dogs tacked on a few more runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th to push the lead to 7-1 going into the 7th.  The Royals snuck one run across in the seventh, but Polley was able to shut the door on the rally.  The Dogs were led by Houston (2-2); Tyler Westrich (2-3) and Anthony Travelsted (1-3).

On Saturday, the Dogs were unable to sweep the series, but played well despite one inning.  Junior RHP Michael Klayer got the nod for the Bulldogs and provided 3 2/3 innings work before a few errors and walks in the 4thallowed the Royals a big 4-run inning.  Junior LHP Matt Rollyson and senior RHP David LeClerc came in to relieve Klayer.  Offensively, the Bulldogs really couldn't get much going all game.  The Dogs had runners on all day, but couldn't string together enough consecutive hits to put anything together.  The Dogs were again led by senior OF Tyler Houton and senior OF Tyler Westrich while junior C Brooks Bireley was on base all three times and junior PH Owen Gilbert was able to drive a run home on an infield hit.

The Bulldogs move to 7-4 on the season and 2-4 in the HCC.
