The Varsity Girls' Basketball Team improved to 13-2 last night with a HUGE win over 5th ranked, McCutcheon, in a HCC showdown.  The teams traded baskets in the first quarter with the Dogs leading after one, 13-12.  The Dogs jumped out early in the second quarter pushing their lead to 8 points with just under four minutes left to play in the half.  The Mavs continued to pressure the Dogs in the full court, forcing several turnovers and converting layups.  The Mavs chipped away at the Dogs' eight point lead, cutting it to one as the half expired.  The Dogs led 23-22.  The Dogs struggled on the offensive end in the third quarter, with Stephanie Mavunga scoring all nine of the Dogs' points.  The Dogs trailed after three quarters, 32-36.

The Mavs led much of the fourth quarter as they hit back to back 3-point buckets to pull ahead 42-35 with 2:48 to go.  Less than a minute and a half later, the Dogs recaptured the lead as Kayle Comer scored 8 straight points, including a 3-pointer from the wing to give the Dogs a 43-42 lead.   The Mavs made two free throws with 37.6 seconds left to take the lead, but the Dogs responded with a layup in traffic by Lindsey Low to take the final lead, 45-44, with 9 seconds remaining in the game.

The Dogs continued to play awesome defense in the final seconds as Stephanie blocked a shot and Kayle grabbed the final rebound to secure the win.  The Dogs played outstanding defense throughout the night, holding the Mavs 27 points below their season offensive average.

Stephanie scored a game high 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had 7 blocks and 4 steals.  Kayle finished with 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting.  Kayle also pulled down 4 rebounds.  Katie Reinhart had a great night with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Chloe Dygert played awesome defense in the second half, defending one of the Mavs leading scorers.  Allison DeVaney had a solid performance, handling the ball for the Dogs under pressure.

The Dogs will take some time off to rest, before facing Zionsville in the Coaches vs. Cancer game on January 18th.  Way to go Ladies!
