Girls' Basketball Wins Center Grove Invite

The Varsity Girls' Basketball team improved to 10-2 on the season with three big wins over the winter break.

On December 17th, the Dogs faced conference foe Noblesville.  The game went down to the wire, with the Dogs winning 50-45.   The Dogs got off to a great start, leading after one quarter 13-6, and at the half, 25-14.  Noblesville was resilient in the second half, turning up their defense and forcing several fourth quarter turnover.  The Millers connected on several long ranged three point shots to make for an exciting finish to a hard fought contest. Stephanie Mavunga led the Dogs with 30 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocks.  Kayle Comer scored 9 points and made great drives to the bucket.  Allison DeVaney pulled down 5 rebounds for the Dogs.  The Dogs improved to 4-1 in conference play.
 

On December 29th the Dogs traveled to Center Grove to play in the Center Grove Holiday Tournament.  After playing two tough teams, Mooresville and Franklin Central, the Dogs were crowned the champions of the tournament.

 First up for the Dogs, Mooresville.  Katie Reinhart got the Dogs off to a quick start scoring two buckets in the first minute of play.  The Dogs led Mooresville after one quarter of action 15-5.  Mooresville played tough full court defense in the second quarter, forcing several turnovers and outscoring the Dogs by six points in the second quarter of action.  The score at the half, 26-22.  The Dogs showed steady play in the third quarter, connecting on several buckets both inside and outside.  The Dogs maintained the lead 38-32 after three.  The fourth quarter proved to be a bit chaotic as Mooresville played very physical full court defense on the Dogs.  Mooresville tied the game up with just under two minutes to play.  The Dogs remained poisedJ  Kayle Comer stepped up and hit a huge long distance two point shot,  Allison DeVaney made a great drive to the bucket and Stephanie Mavungaconverted on an old fashion three point play to finish the game and capture the win.   The Dogs won by five, 51-46.  The Dogs shot an amazing 61% from the field!  Stephanie finished the game with 23 points, hitting 8 for 10 shots from the field.  Stephanie grabbed 13 rebounds, had 5 blocks and 4 steals.  Kayle was two for three from behind the three point line, finishing the game with 10 points.   Lindsey Low was 2 for 3 from the field, making great drives to the bucket.  Allison finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists and a steal.  Chloe Dygertgrabbed five rebounds for the Dogs.    The Dogs would have a two hour break and before they faced #21 ranked Franklin Central (8-2).

 The Dogs got off to another great start against the Franklin Central Flashes, leading after the first quarter of play, 12-8.  The Flashes were difficult to guard in the second quarter outscoring the Dogs by 3.  The Dogs entered halftime up, 24-23.  The Dogs played great defense in the third quarter, holding the Flashes to just six points in the quarter.  The third quarter score, 35-29.  Franklin Central did not back down.  The Flashes picked up their defensive pressure and connected on a couple of three points shots to close the lead.  The Flashes shot an unbelievable 19 of 20 from the free throw line during the contest.  The Dogs played steady in the fourth quarter, continuing to attack the basket under pressure.  With the Dogs up by three, 51-48, the Flashes had the ball under their basket with 1.6 seconds to go in the game.  The Dogs closely guarded the three point line.  The Flashes connected on a two point layup as time expired.  The Dogs won the game by one, 51-50!   Stephanie Mavunga led the Dogs with 22 points (8 of 10 from the field), 10 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 steals.  Kayle Comer finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds.  Lindsey Low scored 8 points and was aggressive on the offensive end.  Lindsey also grabbed 3 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and had 1 steal.  Margaret Oles, Allison DeVaney, Katie Reinhart, Makenzie Trout, Chloe Dygert and Audrey Lyons each made significant contributions to the game in an effort to secure the win.
