2012 Hendricks County Champions!

The Varsity Girls' Basketball Team won the Hendricks County tournament for the third year consecutive year, Saturday night!  The Dogs have won the tournament four out of the past five years.

The Dogs opened the tournament by avenging an earlier loss to Plainfield in a thrilling, down to the wire win, Friday night.  The Dogs pulled from behind in the final minute of action to post a 61-59 victory.   The Dogs never led until the fourth quarter, in a period that featured seven lead changes and three ties.

The Quakers jumped out to an early lead, forcing nine first half turnovers.  The Quakers were up by 9 heading into halftime, 23-32.

The Dogs found their composure in the second half and did a great job handling Plainfield's always tough defensive pressure.  Kayle Comer scored 10 points in the third quarter to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.  The Dogs were down 40-45 after three quarters of action.  The Dogs picked up their defense, controlled the boards and continued to attack on the offensive end in the fourth quarter.  Stephanie Mavunga scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter.  The Dogs trailed by 5 with just 90 seconds remaining in the game.  Brooke Bronger. Alex Shipley, Kayle Comer and Allison DeVaney played smothering full court defense down the stretch, forcing the Quakers to the free throw line.  The Dogs controlled the boards on three missed free throws and pushed the ball down the court with an urgency to score.

The Dogs took the lead for good on an Alex Shipley 'and 1'.  The Dogs secured a rebound on a missed free throw and hit Alex down court in transition.  Alex attacked the basket and scored a power layup in traffic.  Alex was calm and collected as she stepped to the charity stripe and hit a free throw, giving the Dogs a two point lead with 30 seconds to play.  Allison did a great job defending all night.  She contested Plainfield's last shot as time expired. 

Kayle finished with a team high 16 points.  Allison finished with 13 points, hitting 6 of 7 shots.  Allison also dished out 4 assists and had 4 steals.  Alex finished the night with 10 points and 4 steals.  Katie Reinhart grabbed 5 rebounds and had a solid performance.  Stephanie was recognized after the game for reaching a milestone in her career.  Stephanie scored her 1000th career point during the contest.

 

In the championship game, the Brownsburg Girls' Basketball team faced the Tri West Bruins (11-2).  The Dogs overpowered the Bruins with a 61-42 win, defending their County Crown.  The Dogs got off to a good start, outscoring the Bruins by three in the first quarter.  The Dogs led 12-9 after one.  The Dogs turned up their defense in the second quarter, forcing several Bruins turnovers and converting on the offensive end.  The Dogs scored 22 second quarter points, with an amazing nine different players scoring in the quarter.  The Dogs entered halftime with a 34—19 lead.

 

Tri West did not back down.  They cut the lead to 9 points in the third quarter.  The Dogs pushed back in the fourth, with Katie Reinhart and Stephanie Mavunga scoring 13 of the Dogs' 19 fourth quarter points.  Katie was awesome, posting a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  Stephanie scored a game high 23 points and added 8 blocks.  Allison DeVaney, Kayle Comer, Hannah Mingus and Alex Shipley combined for 20 points.  The Dogs were excited about the return of Hannah Mingus from injury!  Allison grabbed 7 rebounds.   Alex, Kayle andLindsey Low each grabbed 4 rebounds.  Audrey Lyons made a great post move to the basket just seconds after entering the game. Makenzie Trout showed off her ball-handling skills by making a great half court drive to the bucketJ  Makenzie finished with 4 points and 3 rebounds.  It was an overall great team effort!

 

Congratulations to seniors:  Audrey Lyons, Katie Reinhart, Allison DeVaney and Alex Shipley on their third consecutive Hendricks County Championship!  Way to go girls!  The girls improved to 12-2 on the season and face #3 McCutcheon on Wednesday night.
