John Colquitt wins two state titles; Boys' Track finishes state runner-up

By Drew Sandifer

The Brownsburg Boys' Track team completed their season with an impressive runner-up finish at the 2021 IHSAA Boys' Track and Field State Finals. The Bulldogs finished with 40 points, behind state champion Carmel who had 68 points.

The team did walk away with two individual state titles, however, and they both came from junior John Colquitt. Colquitt first won the state meet in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 14.53 into a strong headwind. Then, Colquitt followed it up with a state championship in the 300m hurdles, finishing in a time of 37.84. It's the second consecutive state final with a Bulldog winning an event in the state meet, following Pierce Thomas' win in the long jump in 2019.

Tyray Lackey finished second in the state meet in the high jump, recording a personal best jump of 6'10 before bowing out to eventual state champion Kamyren Garrett, who jumped 7'. Lackey's previous personal record was a 6'8 jump recorded at the Joe Schott Twilight Invitational.

The Bulldogs finished with two more top-5 finishes, as John Colquitt fell short of a historic three-time state champion in a single meet, finishing fourth in the long jump with a personal best distance of 22'9.25". He is joined in fourth place by Marcos Barbosa, who finished fourth in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 14.76. Barbosa's fourth-place finish is especially remarkable, as he finished fourth in sectionals, was the last call back from sectionals, last call back from regionals and still put up a fourth-place effort in the state finals.

Haiden Diemer-McKinney finished 12th with a time of 1:56.49. He was also a part of the 4x400m relay team along with Justin Petty, Scotty Tienda and Jalen Larkey, who finished 13th with a time of 3:24.87. Trevor Nolan also capped off his Brownsburg career with a 19th-place finish in the 3200m run with a time of 9:42.96.

This caps off an extremely successful season for the Bulldogs in which they came away with 10 victories in duals, trinagulars and invites. The team did not finish lower than second in any race in which they competed this season.
