Sectional Champions

The Bulldog Girls Swimming & Diving Team put on a show Saturday at the IHSAA Sectional at the Bulldog Aquatic Center. The Dogs broke two school records and advanced six athletes onto Regional and State competition as they won their first Sectional championship since 1990, using superior depth to outdistance runner-up Pike 460.5 to 371.

"Winning this meet has been our goal all season long, we knew it wouldn't be handed to us, and that every girl on the team would have to bring her best effort," Head Coach Josh Saylor said. "But they did. They have been the definition of a true team all season long and I couldn't be happier for the girls."

The Dogs crowned five Sectional champions, with senior Grace Fulwider having a hand in three of them, as well as both school records set on the day. Fulwider teamed with senior Tia Scoggan, junior Kierra Watson and sophomore Madison Kehr to win the 200 Medley Relay in school record time (1:51.63) and broke a second school record with her win in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.97). Fulwider also added a third Sectional title in the 200 Individual Medley. Fulwider will participate in all three events at the IHSAA State Finals, as will Watson and freshman AJ Moll. Watson won the 100 Butterfly and Moll touched first in the 500 Freestyle, punching their tickets to State.

Freshman Danielle LeClerc will also move on from Sectionals, qualifying for the IHSAA Diving Regional with her impressive third place performance.

"Danielle has improved consistently throughout the season, and qualifying for Regionals is a great accomplishment for her," Saylor said. "All of the girls moving onto Regionals and State have a great opportunity to not only represent Brownsburg, but get valuable experience at the next level and help build our program moving forward."

Kehr (100 Freestyle & 100 Breaststroke), Watson (100 Backstroke) and junior Brianna LaPaugh (500 Freestyle) all turned in runner-up finishes on Saturday, as did the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Fulwider, Kehr, Watson and senior Chloe Wittig. Moll (200 Freestyle), Scoggan (100 Backstroke) and freshman Kaylee Propst (200 Individual Medley) all tallied third place finishes. The quartet of Moll, Scoggan, Wittig and senior Delaney Krug finished fourth in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Juniors Clarice Cross (50 Freestyle), Ashly Kraatz (500 Freestyle), Alyssa Smock (50 & 100 Freestyle) and Megan Wolf (200 Freestyle & 100 Butterfly) all contributed valuable points to help secure the team championship.

The IHSAA Diving Regional will be held on Tuesday, February 11 at Plainfield HS (6 p.m.) while the preliminary round of the IHSAA State Finals will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 14 at the IUPUI Natatorium.
