No. 6 @bhsdogsbhoops Look to Get Back on Track at Zionsville, Terre Haute South

By Sam Weiderhaft

Coming off their first loss since December 13th, the Brownsburg boys varsity team will head to Zionsville to match-up with the Eagles on Friday, and travel to Terre Haute South to take on the Braves on Saturday. Both tips will be at 7:30 PM.

The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 13-2 record, and 4-0 in HCC play.

Bulldog Bits

  • Brownsburg fell to #6 in this week's AP and Indiana Coaches Poll after falling to Carmel on Saturday 44-27.
  • The 27 points scored by the Bulldogs was their lowest points total since March 2nd, 2012, in a 53-24 loss against Ben Davis in the second round of sectionals. Saturday's loss was also the lowest amount of points scored in the Steve Lynch era (started in 2013).
  • Senior Connor Lucas led the scoring charge for the third straight game with 8 points, going 4-4 from the free throw line. Pierce Thomas added 7 more.
  • Carmel held Brownsburg to just 5-31 from the field, and 0-14 from 3-point range
  • The two Brownsburg losses have both been against MIC opponents, the first being a 62-48 setback at Lawrence North.
  • Lucas had a career-high 31 points against Westfield, hitting 9 3-pointers in the game. 6 of those were in the 4th quarter alone.
  • This is the only time this season the Bulldogs will have two true road games in back-to-back days. The last time this happened, Brownsburg took down Westfield and Carmel in the 2018-2019 season.

Scouting Zionsville

The Eagles have followed up their Regional Final appearance from last season with an 11-7 record in this campaign, going 1-3 in the HCC. After stringing together four-straight wins, The Green and White have fell in two consecutive contests, 51-48 at Hamilton Southeastern, and 60-44 at Pike. Their one HCC win was against Noblesville on January 17th, beating the Millers 60-49. Five of the Eagles' seven losses have been by single digits.

The Eagles are led by two seniors this season, Anthony Scales and Ben Weidner. Standing at 6'5, Scales is averaging 13.8 points per game to lead the team. He's coming off being held to just 7 points against Pike on Tuesday. Ben Weidner checks in at 6'2, and is averaging an even 13 points per game this season. He put up 12 against Pike.

Series History

This series has been streaky between these two conference rivals. Brownsburg owns a 17-11 against Zionsville since the '93-'94 season, but is currently on a five game losing streak against the Eagles. The Bulldogs have not beaten Zionsville since December 13th, 2013, in Steve Lynch's first season. Brownsburg won eight-straight games against Zionsville from 2000-2007.

Scouting Terre Haute South

Coming out of Conference Indiana, the Braves post a 6-10 record on the season, going 0-3 in conference so far. They will have a conference game at Bloomington South on Friday before returning home to take on the Bulldogs. The Braves haven't won a game in over a month, and are currently on a six game losing streak. Five of those six losses have been by double digits. The Braves have yet to win against a 4A school this season.

After having a down season last year, Terre Haute South went 20-8 in the '17-'18 season, losing to eventual state champions Warren Central in the Regional Final.

Series History

The Bulldogs and the Braves have met 12 times before, with Brownsburg owning the series record at 8-4. The first meeting in recent memory was on March 2nd, 1999, with the Bulldogs winning 61-47. Last season, it was a route for the Bulldogs, winning 84-46 at Varsity Fieldhouse. Terre Haute South's last victory ended Brownsburg's season in 2018, with a 54-45 win in the second round of Sectionals.
