Boys' and Girls' Cross County Opens Season

The boys' and girls' cross-country teams opened the 2012 campaign with a home meet at Williams Park last evening. The meet consisted of runners paired up and alternating 1 mile runs, 4 total miles for the girls and 6 miles for the boys. The girls turned in a strong performance, defeating Mount Vernon High School by a score of 7 to 14. Cassidy Brown and Julia Popenfoose claimed individual first-place honors, followed closely by Kyra Jo Gaerke and McKenzie Vandersar in second place. Jamie Weider and Brooke U'Ren rounded out the scoring with a strong fourth-place finish.

The boys' team defeated Mount Vernon by a score of 16 to 34 but fell short of a talented Fishers team by a score of 16 to 9. Justin Hays and his partner Mark Bond ran a spirited race to finish second, only 18 seconds behind the winning pair after six fast miles on the grass and trails. Elliot Shaw had a great last mile to bring him and his partner Sam Fellers to a fourth-place overall finish, while the other scoring pair for the Bulldogs was Jack Reed and James Goff.
