Boys' and Girls' Swim Compete at HCC Invite

The Bulldog Swimming & Diving Team took on a loaded field Saturday at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Championships and produced outstanding results, clearing the final major hurdle prior to the championship season. A short-handed Bulldog girls squad finished 8th overall while the boys were in a pitched battle with Noblesville, Westfield and Zionsville, eventually settling in 5th place.
"Overall, our kids were tired and we were also dealing with some flu issues on the girls side," Head Coach Josh Saylor said. "But every team with ambition has been working hard and we're no exception. That said, I was pleased with our overall performance and believe we're on track to reach our big goals at the end of the season."
The girls were led by senior captain Grace Fulwider, who recorded a team high sixth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke and chipped in a 13th place in the 200 Individual Medley.
In relay action, Fulwider teamed with senior Tia Scoggan, junior Kierra Watson and sophomore Madison Kehr for 8th place in the 200 Medley Relay, and joined Scoggan, senior Chloe Wittig and freshman AJ Moll for 9th in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Kehr, Moll, Watson and Wittig finished 8th in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Valuable team points were picked up by Kehr (15th - 100 Freestyle), Moll (15th - 500 Freestyle), Scoggan (16th - 100 Backstroke) and Watson (13th - 100 Backstroke, 15th - 200 Individual Medley). Freshman Danielle LeClerc fared well in her first HCC competition, finishing 16th in diving.
Sophomore Vince Partlow recorded a pair of podium finishes for the boys, including a team high 3rd place in the 500 Freestyle as well as 7th place in the 200 Freestyle.
All three relays for the boys took 4th place, with Partlow contributing to two of those swims. Partlow teamed with juniors Joe Ancel, Cameron Howard and Diego La Torre in the 200 Freestyle Relay and senior Bradley Green, junior Kyle Baney and Howard in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Ancel and Baney each recorded a 6th place individual finish in the 100 Breaststroke and 100 Freestyle, respectively, and teamed with Green and La Torre for 4th in the 200 Medley Relay. Green finished 7th in the 100 Butterfly while Howard (100 Freestyle) and La Torre (50 Freestyle) each added an 8th place finish.
Senior Jared Krug finished 15th in the 100 Freestyle and freshman Frank Schoemer added a 13th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke.
"Our goal going into this meet was to put forth a championship level effort, knowing our times might not match up due to heavy training," Saylor said. "I felt like we did that, and we can now start to fine tune for the championship season and the most exciting swims of the year."
