Westfield Swims Past Dogs

The Bulldog Swimming & Diving Team braved the wind and snow Thursday night, traveling north for an exciting meet against Hoosier Crossroads Conference foe Westfield. The Bulldog girls turned in their best performance on the young season but fell short to the Shamrocks 103-82. The Bulldog boys went back and forth with Westfield in a nail biter, with the meet coming down to the final race. In the end, the Shamrocks had too much to overcome, winning 98-88.

"We don't have an easy early schedule, we've taken on some good teams and unfortunately, we haven't come away with any wins," said Head Coach Josh Saylor. "But that doesn't mean we aren't a good team, too. We are. And taking on quality competition now sets us up for the high stakes meets at the end of the season."

Senior Grace Fulwider led the charge for the girls, contributing to two wins on the evening. Fulwider breezed to an individual victory in the 200 Freestyle and teamed with senior Delaney Krug, junior Kierra Watson and sophomore Madison Kehr to win the 200 Freestyle Relay. Fulwider (100 Breaststroke) and Watson (100 Butterfly) came up an eyelash short of additional individual wins, settling for second place in their respective events.

Two Bulldog freshmen also contributed wins for the Dogs. AJ Moll picked up her first career win in the 500 Freestyle while Danielle LeClerc cruised to victory in diving, with junior Madison Lesko and freshman Alli O'Leary finishing in third and fourth respectively, for a strong performance on the boards.

"The girls did a great job tonight, they competed with a lot of heart and spirit," said Saylor. "This was their best performance of the season and I feel like they continue to gain confidence moving forward."

The Bulldog boys won only two events on the evening but took the Shamrocks to the wire, benefitting from huge performances throughout the lineup.

Senior Bradley Green was a double winner on the evening. Green and junior Diego La Torre gave the Bulldogs a spark by finishing 1-2 in the 100 Backstroke late in the meet, and both swimmers teamed with junior Joe Ancel and sophomore Vince Partlow to win the 200 Medley Relay.

Ancel (100 Breaststroke), La Torre (50 Freestyle) and Partlow (100 Butterfly) all had near miss wins individually, getting close second place finishes, and despite only two first places on the evening several Dogs won tight position races to keep the meet close. Senior Donnie Spencer (50 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke), junior Adam Moll (500 Freestyle) and freshman Frank Schoemer (200 Individual Medley) all stepped up with noteworthy performance.

"The boys are disappointed to come up short again but the way they fought tonight was impressive," said Saylor, "especially some of our younger swimmers or guys that are being counted on heavily now for the first time. This level of investment throughout the team will pay off in the long run."

The Bulldog girls (3-2) and boys (0-2) return to action on Tuesday, December 10, hosting the crosstown rival Avon Orioles at the Bulldog Aquatic Center at 5:30pm.
