"LoT", Athletic Ambassadors meet for 'impactful' round table discussion

By Keelen Barlow

In an effort to build an inclusive school culture, members of Brownsburg's "Leaders of Tomorrow", a progam that exists to empower young leaders of color and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse backgrounds, and Athletic Ambassadors, a cross-age mentor program designed for high school student-athletes to talk candidly with elementary children about fundamental values which dovetails with the BCSC character education curriculum, met Thursday afternoon for a round table discussion on equity and inclusion at Brownsburg High School. The collaboration was centered around building a positive and inclusive school culture at Brownsburg High School.

Quote Highlights

  • "Today's conversation contributes to our goal of creating a more equitable school because we were able to have a safe space and ask uncomfortable questions."
  • "We have to be more open to change. We need to be able to have these tough convos."
  • "I believe collaborating as a group has created a community that can spread the message to end racism together because I believe acting as a group can go a lot further than acting individually."
  • "It's important to be honest, vulnerable, and transparent if you want to enact change."
  • "My takeaway was how important just having a conversation can be, and how much you can learn from just talking to other people... I think we should do more student conversations."
  • "We should include more people to have these conversations because it was very eye-opening, and I think it was very beneficial."
