Girls' Tennis Just Misses a Sectional Win

The varsity girls' tennis team came out battle-ready for the sectional final against Mooresville and very narrowly missed a victory by a 3-2 score.  The competitive level of tennis played was incredible.  The number one doubles team of Blake Stayrook and Shelby Hornback had their best match of the year and were first off the courts, securing our first point.  Our number two team of Laura Smith and Yolandi Geldenhuis grabbed the second point, holding off the Pioneers in a tie-break.  Emily Doehrman, at three singles, was hampered by an injury and could not overcome its limitations.  At number one singles, Katie Bullock pushed her counterpart to the limit but lost a well-played match in three sets.   At number two singles, Nicole Weisman played for three hours and fifty minutes in 88 degree temperatures and lost a 4-6, 6-3, 5-7 decision, worthy of "Sports Center Highlights."  While the outcome was disappointing, our effort and scrappy play was inspiring.  The girls finished with a 6-3 HCC conference record and a 9-7 season record.  Fine job, Lady Dogs!
