Bulldogs Rebound With a Win Over Southport

Offensive movement, team defense, and execution of a game plan resulted in a different team and different result Saturday night as the boys' varsity basketball team beat Southport 71-48. Mycah Whetstone knocked down six points and Evan Finley pounded home six as the Dogs jumped out to a strong start while Kenyatta Hardy and Chase Dutra slowed Southport's Division I signees to one field goal each. After a K.J. Walton drive and finish at the buzzer, the Dogs took an 18-5 first quarter lead. Whetstone continued his hot streak in the second quarter connecting for seven points of the Dogs' 16 second quarter points. The Dogs went to the locker room with a 34-20 lead.

Chase Dutra stepped to the free throw. line in the third going 8-8 and adding a bucket for a 10 point quarter. The Dogs worked to slow Southport who cut the lead to 12. Bulldog team defense at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter created more separation as the Dogs finished the game 18-18 from the free-throw line. Mycah Whetstone led all scorers with 19, going 7-10 from the field, grabbing four boards, dishing out two assists, taking two charges and led the team in deflections. Chase Dutra added 18, going 10-10 from the line, grabbed nine rebounds, and nabbing four steals.

Kenyatta Hardy, K.J. Walton, and Trevor Lucas slowed down Ball State Shooter Michael Ramey, while Chase Dutra and Darrian Ringo corralled Kent State point guard Kellon Thomas. Evan Finley scored a career high 12 points while playing solid defense. Trevor Lucas scored seven points. Kyle Thompson dropped in six points; Sam Comer drained a three ball; and K.J. Walton drove in for a bucket. The Dogs move to 1-1 on the season and begin HCC play this Friday versus Fishers.
