The Bulldog Swimming & Diving Team began the Championship Season on Saturday, traveling to Zionsville for the HCC JV Invitational. The Bulldog divers turned in a dominant performance while the swimmers recorded 39 season best swims in 44 tries - an outstanding 89% improvement - to lead the girls to a fourth place team finish and the boys to eighth place.
"This meet is so important to our team, as it kicks off our championship competitions," Head Coach Josh Saylor said. "If these kids do well - and they did an amazing job - that gives confidence to all the other kids on the team leading into their big meets."
Freshman Danielle LeClerc recorded a runner-up finish in diving, and the Bulldog girls got additional strong contributions from sophomore Hope McQueen and freshman Amy Vertacnik. McQueen (16th - 500 Freestyle) and Vertacnik (11th - 100 Backstroke) were the top individual finishers on the day, and contributed to valuable relays performances.
McQueen and Vertacnik teamed with freshmen Kaly Stevens and Lydia Thomas to finish 13th in the 200 Medley Relay, while Thomas, Vertacnik and freshmen Kimberly Liptak and Allie Miller finished 13th in the 400 Freestyle Relay. McQueen and Miller teamed with freshmen Jordan Liptak and Corrine Lucas to finish 16th in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Seniors Jacob Rance and Caleb Windler had an outstanding day on the boards for the Bulldog boys, finishing first and third in diving. Fellow seniors Aaron Brooks, Josh Hanlon and Connor Lucas led the way in the pool. Brooks had a team high fifth place finish in the 100 Backstroke, while Hanlon (200 Individual Medley) and Lucas (100 Breaststroke) each recorded a sixth place finish individually. Junior Hunter Dahlke also had a strong day individually, finishing ninth in the 50 & 500 Freestyle.
Brooks, Dahlke and Lucas teamed with senior Albert Turk for sixth in the 200 Medley Relay, while Hanlon, Lucas, Turk and senior Connor Rickard finished sixth in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Dahlke, Hanlon, Rickard and freshman Riley Koester finished 10th in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
"These kids have worked hard all season and it was great to see them perform at such a high level," Saylor said. "So many young kids at this meet performing so well, our future is definitely bright."
