Varsity Volleyball: Season Preview

Varsity Volleyball: Season Preview

By Maddie Greer

It may be Katie Maples first year as head coach, but nothing is stopping her from leading the Lady Bulldogs to victory this season.

Maples comes from Avon High School where she was an assistant coach for three years. Since being hired by Brownsburg in December 2019, she has had time to assess her team and set some goals.

New Year. New Season. Same Team.

Last season, the Bulldogs went 9-11 in regular season (2-5 in conference play) and lost in Sectionals to Avon. This season's team consists of 8 seniors, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores and 2 freshmen.

Seniors Skyy Smith,  Ashley Margetts and Audrey Gordon and sophomores Kendall Meller and Audrey Naberhaus are back at the net after an impressive previous season of offense. Smith, Meller and Margetts earned spots on the Hoosier Crossroads Conference (HCC) hitting leaderboards last season with 321, 234 and 223 kills, respectively.

Margetts, junior Jaelyn Keown and senior Katie Hardegree were listed in the HCC top 30 for digs, racking up 338, 299 and 183, respectively.

What's Coming This Season

Although these upperclassmen are clearly leading on the court, Maples says they are providing leadership off the court as well. A transition into a new season with a new coach is never easy, but Maples is looking forward to growth as a unit and team. Coming off of off season play, the team's main strengths are passing and serving. This season holds 4 invitationals as well as play against the tied 2018 HCC leaders Hamilton Southeastern and Avon, with Hamilton Southeastern away on August 29th and Avon on Bulldog turf on September 12th.

The Bulldogs proved their strength and went 3-0 in their pre-season scrimmage against Guerin Catholic on August 14th. Their home opener is on Tuesday, August 20th against the Ben Davis Giants. All three teams will play (Freshmen, JV and Varsity).
