Girls' Swim & Dive Win 7th Consecutive Sectional Title

By: Maddie Greer

The Girls' Swimming and Diving team captured their 7th consecutive Sectional Championship. Today was a great day for the Aquadogs with 4 school records broken, 4 swimming events heading to State and 3 divers on their way to Regionals.

The relay team of junior Maria Gutzweiler, senior Joley Clodfelter, sophomore Annika Schaekel and senior Julia Stonebraker kicked off the very first event of the day by breaking a school record. The 200 Medley Relay team swam a time of 1:50.11.

The team of sophomore Margaret Miller, junior Maria Gutzweiler, senior Julia Stonebraker and senior Elise Dahlke broke the BHS record for the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:39.08. The relay team is also headed to the State meet after winning the event.

Yet another relay team broke a school record and qualified for the State meet. Sophomore Margaret Miller, sophomore Annika Schaekel, junior Rory Smith and senior Elise Dahlke are State-bound and new record holders in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:36.48.

Head Coach Keith Gast says, "We had 3 individual wins and 2 relay wins. 5 of the 12 events was a great day for the bulldogs. Setting 4 school records shows including all 3 relays really showed our team depth. I don't think we had anyone score lower than 6th all day. Might be the best girls "team" I've ever coached. And a really good group of student-athletes on top of that. Great day to be a bulldog!"

Sophomore Margaret Miller broke the BHS record for the 100 Free with a time of 53.51.

Sophomore Annika Schaekel is going to State after placing 1st in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.96, dropping 2.08 seconds.

Junior Ella Wilson was seeded 6th in the 500 Free but dropped an impressive 20 seconds in her swim today. She came in 1st with a time of 5:26.86 and is off to the State meet.

Senior Maya Leman won the diving sectional with a score of 437.10. Junior Emma Wolf came in 2nd with a score of 424.50. Senior Halle Brandt came in 4th with a score of 317.55. All 3 divers will compete in the Regional meet.

Sunday morning, the Bulldog Relay team in the 200 Medley was called back to compete in the State meet. Junior Maria Gutzweiler, senior Joley Clodfelter, sophomore Annika Schaekel and senior Julia Stonebraker will join the group of Bulldogs at the State meet next week.

Gast says, "It's official. Medley relay got picked up on time. 200 medley relay. 100 fly. 500 free. 200 free relay. 400 free relay. On to state! 3 divers on to regional. Oh yeah. Sectional champs. 7 years in a row. 5 for me at Brownsburg. And over a 100 point win. No bulldog finished worse than 5th yesterday. That means we had 3 girls in the top 5 of everything. That's impressive for a team!"

Leman, Wolf and Brandt will move on to the Diving Regionals at Plainfield on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 PM. They will be diving against qualifiers from Avon, Crawfordsville, New Palestine and Lawrence North.

Swimmers will advance to the State preliminary round on Friday, Feb. 14 at 6:00 PM. Those who advance from preliminaries will compete again on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 PM. All swimming and diving State events will be at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI.
