Boys' Swim/Dive Sends 9 Athletes to State This Weekend

Last weekend, the Aquadogs won their 7th consecutive Sectional Championship. This weekend, they are heading to the IU Natatorium for State Finals. On Tuesday, sophomore diver Kale Davidson placed 5th in Diving Regionals and will compete in the State Diving Preliminaries on Saturday morning. 

State preliminaries for swimming are Friday at 6 p.m. at the IU Natatorium on the IUPUI campus. Swimmers who place in the top 8 will continue to State Championships Saturday at 1 p.m. Swimmers who place 8-16 will also swim Saturday in a consolation heat before the championships. 

The Bulldogs are in the running with State Championships with the following events:

200 Medley Relay: freshman Jamie Cameron, freshman Michael Williams, senior Nathanael Schaekel and senior William Scott 

200 IM: sophomore Jacob Johnson

500 Free: sophomore Jacob Johnson 

50 Free: junior Austin Kehr

100 Free: junior Austin Kehr

100 Fly: senior Nathanael Schaekel 

100 Breast: senior Nathanael Schaekel 

200 Free Relay: junior Caleb Peschke, sophomore Jacob Johnson, senior William Scott and junior Austin Kehr

400 Free Relay: junior Caleb Peschke, sophomore Jacob Johnson, junior Lee Grimes and junior Austin Kehr 

Sophomore Kale Davidson placed 5th in Diving Regionals with a score of 410.30. 

Last weekend, the 200 Medley Relay team kicked off the Sectional meet with a 1:41 time. Sophomore Jacob Johnson won the 200 IM and the 500 Free with times of 2:01.33, dropping 3.78 seconds and 4:56.37, dropping 2.39 seconds. 

Junior Austin Kehr won the 50 Free with a time of 20.87. Kehr also won the 100 Free with a BHS record-breaking time of 45.53. The record was previously set by William Eggers in 2005. Senior Nathanael Schaekel won the 100 Fly with a time of 53.21 and the 100 Breast with a time of 58.57, dropping 2.61 seconds. 

The 200 Free Relay team won with a time of 1:27.96, dropping 5.24 seconds and the 400 Free Relay won with a time of 3:13.80, dropping an impressive 13.36 seconds. 

According to the IHSAA, 81 schools and 527 student-athletes have qualified for the State meet. The defending State Champions, the Carmel Greyhounds, have won the past 5 years and if they win this year, it will be their 20th State Championship overall. 

State preliminaries will take place Friday, Feb. 28 at 6:00 PM at IU Natatorium at IUPUI with doors opening at 4:30 PM. According to the IHSAA, "The top 16 in each swimming event during Friday's prelims will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing nine through 16 on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each." 

The State Championships will also be at IU Natatorium at IUPUI on Saturday, Feb. 29. Diving preliminaries and semi-finals will take place at 9:00 AM with doors opening at 7:30 AM. Swimming consolation and finals will begin at 1:00 PM.
