Varsity Boys' Basketball: Season Preview

By: Maddie Greer

Last Season in Review

The Dogs were on fire last season, ending with a 17-7 record that earned them the title of county champs and a 5-2 conference record. The team was also  ranked top 15 most of the season in both IBCA & media polls. Among those 17 wins were dominations over Avon, Plainfield, Franklin Central, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Ben Davis and HSE. Brownsburg was 2nd in HCC Standings, right behind Zionsville (7-0 conference record).  In an upset, the Bulldogs lost in the first round of Sectionals to Plainfield with a score of 46-43. The Dogs will start this new season minus the 7 seniors from last year, but this team is ready to prove they are a force to be reckoned with.

Big Dogs

The Varsity team consists of 3 seniors, 9 juniors and 1 sophomore, 6 of which were on the Varsity roster last year (Lucas, McGowan, Edmonds, Bragg, Lacey and Thomas). The team is currently ranked #14 in the state. Head Coach Steve Lynch says "I really like our leadership and see this team developing through the season as the new players gain some valuable game experience. I feel like we had some questions about who would step up was excited to see who would take the off season the most serious. We have had several young men work hard to potentially put themselves into the rotation."

Some HCC Stat Leaders from Last Season:

  • Senior Malek Edmonds was in the top 20 scorers with 251 points and HCC top 20 field goal leaders with 99 FGM.

  • 2 players in the top 20 rebounders (Malek Edmonds with 113-RPG of 4.7 and Pierce Thomas with 107-RPG of 4.5).

  • 2 players in the top 20 free throwers (Malek Edmonds with 47 FTM and Pierce Thomas with 43 FTM).

  • Junior Pierce Thomas was in the top 20 assist leaders with 98 assists and 4.1 APG and earned a double-double in 1 game.

  • 2 players in the top 20 steal leaders (Pierce Thomas with 34 steals and 1.4 SPG and Luke Lacey with 23 steals and 1.3 SPG).

What's Coming Up

The Bulldogs will kick off the official season on Nov. 27 at North Central-Indianapolis at 7:30 pm. Head Coach Lynch says "We have a very quality schedule that will challenge us nightly. I think our kids get excited to conference games, county and sectional opponents" and "The team has a good mix of veteran talent and talented newcomers to the varsity squad this season. They have played very well together and scored the ball fairly well. We will continue to develop defensively and have to find a way to score against the tough schedule we will play. I love our off season development and the improvements that we have seen from the players." The first conference game is a double-header at Franklin Central on Dec. 6 at 7:30 pm. This season holds 22 games with 8 home games and 5 double-headers. The Dogs will face off against rival Avon in Dec. 20 double-header at home.

To kick off the 2019-2020 season, the team will play in a scrimmage at Center Grove on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 pm.
