2013 Girls' Basketball Sectional Champs!

Ben Davis

The Girls Basketball team got its sectional redemption on Friday night with a 40-39 victory over Ben Davis.  In a very physical game, the Dogs played tough in front of an awesome hometown crowd.  The Dogs had a one point lead, 19-18, after a tightly contested first half.  The Giants turned up their defense in the third quarter, forcing several Dogs' turnovers.  The Giants went on a 10-2 run to take an eight point lead, the largest of the game by either team.  But the Dogs refocused and there was a shift in momentum when Kayle Comer hit a three pointer with 2:06 minutes remaining in the third quarter ending the run.

The Dogs tied the score at 37-37 when Chloe Dygert found Stephanie Mavunga under the basket.  With 48 seconds remaining and the Dogs trailing, 38-39, Lindsey Low found Stephanie on an inbounds play.    Stephanie was fouled on the shot and stepped up and hit two big free throws with 22.8 seconds remaining to give the Dogs a one point advantage.

The Bulldogs had three fouls to give after Stephanie hit the free throws and they used them to burn time on the Ben Davis inbounds play.  With 7.2 seconds remaining, the Giants inbounded the ball.  Margaret Oles played awesome defense and was able to knock the ball loose with teammate Lindsey Low grabbing the loose ball.

Margaret quickly became a crowd favorite showing her hustle and determination throughout the night!  Stephanie scored a game high 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.  Kayle added 12 points.

Pike

The Girls Basketball team won their first sectional title since 2001 on Saturday night in an exciting win over Pike, 51-45.  The Dogs led throughout the game, jumping out to a 14-9 start in the first quarter and a 24-17 lead at the half.  The Red Devils attacked the basket in third quarter, cutting the Dogs' lead to five 35-30.  The Red Devils went on a 6-1 run to start the fourth quarter, tying the score at 36.

Stephanie Mavunga converted on back to back shots to help the Dogs regain control and keep Pike out of reach.  Stephanie scored 8 of her game high 25 points in the fourth quarter.   Margaret Oles overcame a hard foul in which she was knocked into the scorer's table to make four consecutive free throws (as the crowd chanted her name:).

Lindsey Low had a great night, scoring 11 points and hitting a 3 pointer in transition.  Lindsey and Kayle Comer played awesome defense on Pike's top scorers.  Chloe Dygert was all over the court, creating chaos on the defensive end and attacking the basket on the offensive end.  Aliyah Walker finished strong with a big block and rebound at the end of the game.  The Dogs defense held the Red Devils to 17-58 (29.3 percent) shooting from the field.

A HUGE shout out to the Bulldog fans as they were loud and proud throughout the sectional tournament!  We could not have done it without your support!

The Dogs will face #5 Roncalli on Saturday at noon at Decatur Central.  Come out and support your Dogs!
